Die Gladiatoren von Capua kämpfen in der Arena auf Leben und Tod zur reinen Belustigung der römischen Herrscher. Die Exekutierung eines der Sklaven durch Prätor Crassus ist für den unerschrockenen Gladiator Spartacus das Zeichen zur Rebellion. Er fasst den wahnwitzigen Entschluss, mit der ihn liebenden Sklavin Varinia und den Sklaven des Landes in ihre Heimatländer zurückzukehren. Spartacus formiert ein ganzes Heer, um in die Freiheit zu ziehen. Aber der machthungrige Crassus, der das Römische Imperium bedroht sieht, schickt seine Legionen gegen den Rebellen und seine Armee aus. Eine blutige Schlacht beginnt.
